CA Storage of ¢¥ Fuji ¢¥ Apple Fruits by Continuous Gas Flow Method and Its Application to a Simple CA System

Abstract
Fuji apple fruits were stored in low oxygen CA conditions using a simple apparatus which produces N©ü gas containing a fixed O©ü concentration and supplies the gas continuously to storage chamber. The applicability of the apparatus as a new practical CA system was evaluated, and the respiration and ethylene production rate was also determined in the CA conditions. At oxygen concentrations of 1 and 3%, the respiration rates of Fuji fruits were calculated as 0.61 and 0.76 mL CO©ü/§¸/h, respectively, which fall within a half of that at 20.8% O©ü. The measurement of respiration rate was required as an operation parameter for a new CA system. This simple CA apparatus, in which the gas concentration can be controlled easily by adjusting constituent gas flow rate, operated successively for a long storage period without the aid of additional gas analyser or other expensive automatic control units, so that it was suggested that this system could by applied as a new practical low-cost CA storage system.
